Question by kalamibe: Why do the laws continue to allow pet stores to sell puppies?
Wouldn’t passing a law that prohibited the sale of puppies at stores make a huge impact in shutting down puppy mills? Why is this legal? You always hear politicans talking about animal rights, why don’t they do something about it and make it illegal for stores to sell puppies??!! And, why, when shows like Dateline and 20/20 do undercover investigations of these puppy mills, don’t they bring cops with them to shut them down, arrest and throw in jail the cold-hearted a-holes that run them?? Obviously it’s going to take more than telling people “don’t buy a puppy at a pet store” for this madness to stop. For every person who decides to not buy from a store, there is always somebody who will. I just don’t understand…..

You know I love animals too, but, putting yourself into a downward spiral of stress won’t help. Besides the good ones outweigh the bad ones. The law are definitely working on this and unless you have seen a bad one personally you really can’t help.

Question by reallyfedup: Do lyou think it is right for an apartment to charge a very high deposit for a pet ?
I think it is ridiculous that my apartments charge 300 for a pet deposit. THere is nothing in my apartment that the cat could tear up that is worth that much. Old dirty carpet, and appliances. I own all the furniture and blinds, etc. The children here destroy more and write on everything and the people throw trash everywhere.

Unfortunately, pet owners can cry all they want (and for the record, I’m on your side about kids tearing up things more), however, there are some things that pets do that children can’t.
If you have a pet, the apartment needs to be sanitized when you leave. What if the next person to move in is highly allergic to cat/dog hair? Secondly, when animals mark their territory (very common, especially when an animal was resident before), it is nearly impossible to remove the odor. Most of the time, the carpet and padding have to both be replaced. This can be pretty costly.
I think there should be a child deposit too.

Question by Jacquot- Un chat furieux: Is your pet ready for a disaster if it strikes your home?
I never took this all that seriously until now. I live in the Red River Valley and got kicked out of my home. Thankfully I had a place for my pets, but I have to wonder “what if?”
Here is a guide I got tonight from the animal shelter I was working at today.
If your animal(s) will be in need of shelter at the emergency animal shelter, please prepare an emergency kit prior to bringing your animals to the shelter.
The kit should include:
medications
current vaccination/medical records
food – at least three day supply, in an airtight container
current photos and description of your pets
pet carrier
sturdy leashes
familiar items, i.e., blankets, toys, pet beds
Also, make sure your pet has identification tags.
