So, I’m getting two girl pet rats this weekend, and I need allll the advice & tips that I can get !

I know that I am going to keep them in an aqarium because I have heard from many people that that is the best option, as long as it is big & roomy! Also, I have guinea pigs & I use fleece bedding, could I use that for my rats also? The thought of carefresh or any type of lose bedding DISGUSTS ME because I couldn’t handle haveing to clean that, and with fleece I just sweep up the poops & throw the blankets in the wash once a week, so easy & sanitary.
DO NOT TELL ME NOT TO KEEP MY PET IN AN AQARIUM PLS!
Any comments or opinions on bedding are welcome.

I am also buying my rats from petco,
I have spoken with the managers, & they have told me that all of their rats are extremly healthy,
although not very well socialized, any advice on training them & gaining their trust?
I also live in alabama SO THERE ARE NO BREEDERS AROUND MY AREA!

But anyways, moving on.

Question by big dreams coming: Bedding or blankets for rats? post rats playing with their favorite toy ?
I have a quick question, i noticed a few people use blankets to cover the bottom of the rat cage for bedding, I use carefresh ultra (quite pricey /: ) so im hoping to save money by changing to putting nice soft cotton-ish? fabric at the bottom of the cage. My moms a seamstress so she has a bunch of spare fabic i could use. I also use a pet-safe cleaner in the cage to get rid of the dust and smell.
Which would be better for them?

Also i LOVE seeing rats playing with their favorite toys and i’d love it if people posted pictures!
also, would it be better to wash the fabric or toss it? would it just depend on the filthy ness?
and i will be sure to give them pieces of tissue or something to make warm cozy beds (:

The rat breeders I deal with through the pet shop ALL use fabric scraps to line the bottom of the cage along with shredded newspaper and hypo-allergenic paper towel and tissue. From what I’ve heard from them, they raid the leftover fabric bins at the local fabric and craft supply stores weekly and grab pretty much whatever is available. Sometimes they also buy old clothing from charity shops and toss those in as a cheap option. As another option, I’ve sometimes bought heaps of new towels from dollar shops (1$ a hand towel, how could you go wrong?) and used them as bedding, then just toss ‘em when they’re filthy. I don’t think there’s a certain fabric to avoid unless it’s rough, and I’ve seen just about everything you can imagine in the bottom of a rat cage.

I wish I could post a picture of our rat habitat from the shop, but I’ve misplaced my camera. It’s a dog toy car tire suspended by a piece of airline tubing from the roof, and when one sits in it and others come to see what’s going on, it’s like they’re playing in a tire swing from the good old days. If I find my camera, I’ll post a picture for sure.

Borax will do it. It’s in the laundry aisle. Sprinkle all the bedding with it, let it sit for a while and vacuum up. Do the same to the carpets (if applicable) in the house. You should be ok after that, but you can repeat if necessary. It’s safe for kids and pets. Good luck!

Over the years, electric blankets have become a lot safer, but there are a few safety tips to practise regarding electric blanket safety.

It’s advised that young children or infants should not use one. Pregnant women and diabetic patients should ask their doctors first before doing so. Patients with pacemakers should also talk to their physician.

When you buy a blanket, make sure you read all directions for the use and cleaning of it. Read the manufacturers label and instructional booklet. Be aware that some warming blankets should not be washed with water.

When you are not using your bedding, turn it off. Make sure that it is always kept flat when on as allowing it to “ball up” could present a fire hazard if the heat is concentrated in one area of the bed.

These heating products shouldn’t be used on a waterbed and do not allow your pets near them in case they damage themselves or the blanket by chewing the wires.

Keep alert for signs of wear and tear on your blanket and do not use it if you see any problems. Replace them every ten years and make sure any new ones you obtain are tested by agencies like Underwriters Laboratories. If you are using a second hand blanket you should take extra care in checking it over, although it is recommended that you invest in new ones that come with directions and warranties.

Turn off the blanket before you go to sleep unless it is made to be left on all night, some are. Store the blanket flat if possible or roll it up; try to avoid folding. Check before you dry clean your blanket as it could damage the heater wire insulation. Never used pins near it or sit on top of it either as the insulation can be punctured by a broken wire and cause hazards.

If you feel it’s necessary, have your blanket tested every so often; you can always check with the store where you bought it to find out about testing or servicing if you are having a problem.

It’s recommended that you don’t use a blanket that is more than ten years old. Look for an old BEAB safety mark, which is a round symbol.

Be diligent and use common sense and your blanket will work well and give you enjoyment for a long time. Check it frequently for fraying fabric, scorch marks, broken wires, and loose connections.

Tarantula or hamster. I say tarantula (G. rosea I recommend).

No need for handling, cannot escape once their is a secure lid on, change water once a week, feed one cricket a week and change it’s substrate(bedding) once or twice a year.
Don’t smell – just remember to remove dead/left over prey.

When you first bring it home, it will be lonely, and constantly whining or whimpering – it’s missing its mom, and its siblings. Just calm it gently and speaking as softly as you can, as you would soothe your natural baby, and try and cover it with a towel. It’s been found effective in making it feel less lonely. You can help also by stroking it while you walk around your chores, and occasionally do pick it up and caress it. That will make it less homesick and get attached to you.

Just as we all learnt to have our favorite bedding, blankets, Golden retrievers too can be made to come to love what it gets. But don’t ever try getting an expensive blanket for it. it will just chew it away! Get some good quality blankets from a thrift store nearby and buy them in half a dozen. You can get a bargain, and you don’t have to worry about it for the next three or four weeks.. keep your fingers crossed. Golden Retrievers are known for chewing their blankets !

The best bed you can make for your Retriever inside the house is with a woollen blanket – an old one – and keep its meal and water, close by all the time. If inside the house and sleeping with you in your bedroom, well, you better be prepared to get up twice or thrice to take it outdoors for it to answer nature’s call. You will get used to it, and so will your pet! You bet!

And yes, after you have fed it, you should take it out after an hour so that it learns to answer nature’s calls outside.

If you are going to leave the Golden Retriever outdoors, make sure you build or buy a sturdy one, which will be comfy for it; Use wooden straw for it on the floor or use newspapers or both. You can also try wooden shavings. Do provide a small curtain at both ends: it too feels the cold, you know, and the breeze or wind can make it uncomfortable. And yes, if it is cold, you can use that unused blanket or quilt that you just kept it away.. maybe you would have to look for it. It would love to snuggle into the quilt, and you may have to unfold the whole quilt to find where it went into!

The Golden Retriever is a very friendly dog, and loves to be cuddled and fondled, and it has a smirk on its face most of the time, as if it was making a fool of you. And it enjoys playing, galloping here and there, so you better train it to behave as well!
