The concept of correcting your dog can create a contest of willpower between you and your pet. Anyone who has ever lived with even a slightly naughty dog can tell you that such critters thrive on contests of willpower. A four year old child whining in Walmart for a candy bar still hasn’t got the reserve of willpower held by the average dog.

For example, if you’ve ever corrected your dog from getting up on the couch or eating off a counter, he knows you don’t like him doing it. Does he stop? Heck no. He simply does the behavior when you’re not looking. Or maybe he even does it in front of you with a look that says, go ahead, try and stop me.

That’s because Fido knows what you want. But he just knows he has the option of doing it anyway because maybe, just maybe, today is the day when mom or dad doesn’t have the strength to deal with me.

The answer is NOT to yell at or correct your dog more or harder. That’s a hard lesson to learn for most pet owners. But as you may have found by now, correcting more and more simply makes for an enjoyable challenge for the dog. He thinks, “Go ahead, make my day, because I feel lucky today, punk.”

Let’s take luck out of the training process!

Here is a set of simple instructions to follow to stop your dog from doing an indoor behavior such as getting on the couch, snarfing food off counters, eating the trash, etc.

1.         Do not reprimand the dog. You’ll only teach him to wait till you’re not around if you do so.

2.         Instead, keep a supply of empty plastic milk jugs handy all over your house.

3.         Into each empty ½ gallon or gallon jug, place a couple handfuls of dried beans and replace the cap.

4.         When you find the dog on the sofa—or better yet eyeballing it with intent—loft a jug so that it lands on or near your dog, depending on his size or temperament.

5.         When you throw the jug, DO NOT look at or even say anything to your dog, and do not pick up the jug again in your dog’s presence.

6.         Your dog will think, “Hmmm, God drops a loud bomb on my head every time I even look at the couch.”

This process will not harm your dog as it certainly does not hurt. In fact, it won’t even hurt his feelings because you haven’t yelled at him. However, it will make the behavior a great deal less fun than it was before.

You may only have to do the above once or twice to make the couch (trash, or whatever) a “bad place” for Fido. But what you have removed from the contest is YOURSELF. You have made the contest between Fido and God, and believe me, God always wins.

Always give your dog adequate company. In case you are going to leave the dog alone for a long time, it might become nervous. In this anxiety, it can get into trouble. Train your dog to stay in a crate and also teach it to stay only in one room of your house. Else it might chew furniture, claw at walls and clothing, topple the trash and break items in the house. Training it to stay in a small room can keep it calm.

You can also show your dog your love for it by taking it for a walk at least a time or two everyday and also allowing it to play outside. Dogs naturally love exercise and not only will you benefit from the exercise, but you will also get closer to your dog. At least allow the dog to run on its own in the backyard if you don’t have enough time to take it for a stroll.

A third way to make your dog understand your love is to feed it well everyday. The dog food is available in the market for varied breeds and the age of each breed. Consult your vet for identifying the best dog food you can provide your dog. Dogs of different ages, need different nutrients, to maintain their healthy coat and teeth. Make sure all changes are introduced gradually since it could upset the dog’s appetite.

Give your dog its own space to show it respect. Keep the dog’s bed and blanket clean and also pay attention to it everyday. Never disturb a dog that is sleeping. This can cause a surge of anger in the dog. Respect your dog’s boundaries. This is a crucial part in taking care of the dog. Certain small breeds, do not like getting their space invaded when they feel irritable. You will slowly learn to understand when you should socialize with it and when to leave the dog alone.

Not only will the dog be able to spend time with you, you and the dog will benefit from the exercise. Even if you do not have time to walk the dog everyday, you should still let the dog run around your back yard so it gets the exercise it needs.

Making sure your dog has enough food during the day is the third way that you can show your dog love. There are dog foods for different breeds and stages of life. You should research which dog food is the best by asking the vet, reading about what your dog needs, and by reading the labels on the food. As dogs age, they will need different nutrients to keep their teeth and coat healthy. It is best not to switch dog food brands often because you may upset the dog’s stomach. If you want to introduce a new dog food, do it slowly until the dog gets used to it.

Respecting your hypoallergenic dog’s space will result in the more respect from your dog. Make sure your dog has a clean bed or blanket and they receive enough attention during the day. If your dog is sleeping, then you should not disturb it. This will only make the dog angry. Taking care of a dog also means respecting the dog’s boundaries. Some small breeds will become angry when their space in invaded during times when they do not want to be disturbed. As your dogs grows, you will learn when to socialize with the dog and when leave it alone.
