Whether you are choosing a pedigree pup or a homeless pound dog care must be taken to ensure it is healthy right from the start. Most shelters will have given their dogs a thorough check-up before putting them up for adoption, and any long term medical issues will be declared.
If you buy direct from the breeder, make sure that the parents have been tested for genetic problems such as hip dysplasia. Try to make sure there is no history of ailments in the breeding; the pup should be free from sniffles and have good clear eyes. A pup that seems lethargic may have an infection, so choose a bouncy one or make sure he has been checked by a vet before taking him.
When you get your new pal home, follow any special instructions that might have been given to you by the rescue center or breeder. Pups need to be wormed regularly and you can easily get the tablets from your vet or pet store. They may need vaccinations for diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and parainfluenza if they haven\’t already had them and a booster shot when they are a year old.
While you may think that the odd treat is not a problem, dogs like humans can become obese putting strain on their heart and lungs. You should stick to a balanced diet and cut down their food if they are becoming overweight. Some large breeds grow too quickly if their diet is protein rich. Breeds like Great Danes can develop joint problems in later life if they get too tall too fast; take advice on feeding if you are not sure what is best for them.
Many breeds have beautiful long or curly coats. They need regular grooming and clipping to prevent matting and possible infections around the eyes and anus. If you have to bath your pet, use a mild shampoo or one formulated for dogs that will help treat fleas and ticks.
You can prevent most fleas and ticks with regular drops to the back of the neck, or injections. The drops make the skin unfriendly to parasites, but can also harm you dog, so place them on the back of his neck where he can\’t lick. Prevention is better than cure; as no matter how careful you are, it is easy for them to pick up parasites when out for a walk. A bad infestation can cause terrible skin rashes and lead to infections.
Regular exercise, good grooming, a balanced diet and lots of loving will make your dog a loyal companion for life. Whether he is a pedigree or a pound dog care for him and he will take care of you.
