Question by good_enuff2: OK So Cats like eating grass. The pet store sells me grass. Then why does he throw it up on my floor everytime?
I need a person that really knows the answer. Like vet or something. Not some lady that has 32 cats in her home because she likes them and is saving them but eventually is arrested for crimes against cats. And tell me.. What is the proof for your answer???
And by the way I feed my indoor cat like the most expensive cat food available. NUTRO DRY INDOOR FOOD!
Nutro was reccomended by my cat’s Vet and always was.
Great Answers.. Just very good answers. It all makes sense now. Thanks everyone. Now how do I pick a best answer from all the these. I’ll have to put it up for a vote. Again Thanks!

Grass helps cats vomit up hairballs and things like that- THAT’S why they eat it. Cat grass is good for indoor cats who have occasional hairballs or digestive problems- but that’s why they seem to enjoy eating it. They know what their cure is to feeling sick and what makes them sick- eating grass. It’s not a treat to them- it’s a medicine.

Opening a pet store… setup cost?

Question by Sky: Opening a pet store… setup cost?
Okay, I’ll try to shorten it as much as possible. Firstly, I do not like how some stores treat their pets… especially their fish, like bettas, who sit in icky dangerous cups of algae, ammonia, etc. So I thought… “hey, why don’t I start up my own?”

My store will be based around the fair treatement of all the animals, and there will be NO mill animals – there will be animals from pounds, spca’s, surrenders, strays, etc, preferably. The costs of animals like cats and dogs will be based on vaccinations and getting them fixed (if they are at the age for it). Bettas alone will be in a 2.5-5 gallon tank each with heaters, and all fish will have proper sized tanks (goldfish, cichlids, neon tetras, danios, barbs, etc) plus with other compatible fish.

I will also be making animal treats, and because people love their dogs to be dressed (or the dog needs to have a coat o_O ) clothing apparel, along with booties, collars, leashes, halters… There will be blankets, pillows, and toys as well. Toys bought and made :) Some animals I can breed myself, which then nature just takes it’s course anyways (hamsters, gerbils, bettas, platys, mollies, etc) which of course they will be humanely bred (not rows of hamsters pregnant kind of dealeo for example) with proper research done before, during and after, plus kept safe, healthy, clean, and happy!!! THAT’S the primary goal for the animals including fish. I would see a happy, active, vibrant betta sell faster than a sickly, cold, inactive betta – same goes with other animals.

I would be holding “adoption days” as well, working with pounds and spca’s closest to me.

So, how much would the initial cost be? I am in Canada, and where I live there is ONE pet store and people are forced to go to the city for “petsmart” or “petco” places if they want something specific, or because there is more competition therefore lower prices.

So, if I make some stuff myself, that’s pretty cheap. I can do that ahead of time too :) I have sewing experience and am pretty good with designing and such. I also know a heck load of carpenters and a contractor even who can help, which also cuts the cost. I guess I would be leasing a building, right?

I’m guestimating 40,000.00? what do you think? I am thinking of saving up for 3-5 years (probably closer to 5).
Hey Blingee, I don’t think anyone wants your aids. So, how about… no? nein? non? ne? na? de?
immat, okay, but there is only one pet store here. You know why? because the best one retired, and this one remains. There are no chain stores, so not much competition. Even walmart lacks to sell anything worth while. My costs sure would be the animals, fish, accessories and the costs you mentioned. But what I wonder is what number am I aiming for?

Yes, certain types of mold can actually be very toxic. Molds and algeas are sometimes benificial (this is where we found penicillin so long ago) but some like ‘blue-green’ algea are actually so toxic that injesting it can kill a cow…. don’t risk it, discard the whole box and call the company. Report the mildew so they can monitor and test, it may be nothing, but the company won’t know about it unless you call them. It might be something in your home that caused it, but report it anyway to the company just to be safe, you might save someone else’s pet!

Question by : What are the chances of opening a pet store and it staying open?
I know there are so many pet stores… but this is what I really want to do with my life :P
my petstore would be different…
I would have a grooming station and a Photography station within the store… i dont want a huge store… I want more of a boutique.
I would probably want a total of 4 groomers (having 2 work the first 5 hours its open and the second 2 working the last 5 hours its open)
I would want 2 photgraphers… again one working first 5 one working second 5.
I would sell cute doggy clothes/ coats/ halloween costumes, Collars, Leashes, cat &dog toys, Food (but only the healthy non-filler foods), Home made treats, normal treats.
I would not sell any pets… I would however promote the humaine societies in my area.
I would sell beds/blankets/shampoo (other grooming stuff), and then just stuff for dog owners… like those shirts and mugs that say “I love my German Sheperd”

So do you think a store like this would stay open?
I would plan on opening it in an upper-middle or upper class area.
during the holidays we would have santa come in… so people could take picture with their pets and santa! :)

There is a market out there for pet grooming services. I know of one in my town.

Like any business you need to do your homework on the market, competition and the financial outlays.
